We meet them once a week in the Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Department at Soroka Hospital. Heroic children and families who experience emotional rollercoasters daily, who are fighting to find the strength to cope with this difficult journey. Our team, which includes certified complementary-medicine volunteers with a wonderful approach to children, offers them (both the children and their accompanying family members) touch therapies, massages and dynamic treatments that help patients and their families cope with the disease.
Dotan Malkieli (2004-2017) was a mere month away from his Bar Mitzva when the cancer he bravely fought for 4 years overpowered him. He was an optimist who loved to smile, for whom giving and loving his fellow humans was a way of life. During Dotan’s hospitalizations and even during his last days, when he no longer wanted to see a soul, he lovingly accepted the power and touch of Ruach Dromit’s therapies.
Shlomo Artzi’s song “Imagine” was Dotan’s motto, and the Dotan’s Angels project is our way of fulfilling the lyrics of the song he so loved, and of imagining a beautiful world for every child whose journey we share.
In addition to the magical touch and generosity that the team behind Dotan’s Angels brings, the meeting between the therapists and the children and their families provides an opportunity for an informal chat, a smile, a pleasant atmosphere, and a new energy that the therapists, who are not part of the permanent medical team, brings.
The treatments take place wherever the child is– a hospital bed, a treatment couch, or a waiting-room chair, so that they do not have to move around, and of course – everything is fully volunteer-based and free of charge.
To support cancer patients’ emotional and mental wellbeing, we make sure to regularly provide activities for children– circus shows that alternate between rooms, calming sounds, drumming circles, musical processions, handing out toys and gifts, especially at Festivals, Chanukah, Purim etc. and anything that can lift the children’s spirits and help them pass the time in a pleasant manner.
In select opportunities, the Dotan’s Angels team also embraces accompanying families by offering workshops, lectures, counselling, complementary medical treatments, and tools that will help them better deal with the emotional rollercoaster that is prompted by their loved one’s illness.
